What if I need care when the clinic is closed?

In an emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest Emergency Department. Otherwise, you have a few options:

  • Call 811 (Tele-Care) any time, day or night, to speak with a nurse about your symptoms and where to go.
  • Virtual Care NB offers virtual appointments for common, non-urgent problems, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week. Start with the online symptom checker or by calling 811. Learn more
  • Ask a pharmacist. New Brunswick pharmacists can assess and treat many common ailments and renew many prescriptions, at no charge. Learn more
  • Go to a local walk-in clinic.
  • Book an appointment online if it can wait until your physician is available.

Where can I get help for mental health or a crisis?

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911.

  • 988 Suicide Crisis Helpline: call or text 988, 24 hours a day.
  • NB Addiction and Mental Health Helpline: 1-866-355-5550, 24 hours a day.
  • Mobile Crisis Services (Saint John area): 1-888-811-3664.
  • Community addiction and mental health services: counselling and other support. Find services

For help finding community supports such as housing, food or financial help, call 2-1-1 (211 New Brunswick), 24 hours a day.

You can also book with your family physician to talk about your mental health.

What do I do if I am outside the province or country?

Research the local health-care system before visiting any other province or country so you are familiar with the options available. For non-urgent care you can also call your clinic or book an appointment online. You may wait until you can be seen by your physician, or your physician may be able to speak with you by phone.

I want a physician in your clinic. Where do I sign up?

We are currently not accepting new patients. New patients are added through NB Health Link. To register, visit nbhealthlink.ca or call 811.

This applies to family members of our patients as well. We can’t add new patients by phone or walk-in, so the best way to help a loved one is to make sure they are registered and that their contact details with NB Health Link and Medicare are up to date.

Is my medical information safe?

Yes. Your medical history is kept in an electronic medical record (EMR) that is compliant with New Brunswick’s Personal Health Information Privacy and Access Act (PHIPAA) — the provincial law that governs how health information is collected, used, stored and shared.

In practice, PHIPAA means:

  • Your information is collected and used only to provide your care, or for the limited purposes the law specifically permits.
  • It is held securely, with safeguards such as encryption and controlled access.
  • Only the people involved in your care may look at your record, and that access is logged so it can be audited.
  • Your information is not shared outside your circle of care without your consent, except where the law requires it.
  • You have the right to see your own record, to ask for a correction, and to ask who has accessed it.

Does my physician use an AI scribe?

Some of our physicians use Heidi, an AI scribe, during appointments. With your knowledge, it listens to the visit and drafts the clinical note, so your physician can spend the appointment with you rather than typing.

Heidi is PHIPAA compliant and is held to the same privacy and security standards as the rest of your record. Your physician reviews and edits every note before it becomes part of your chart, and remains responsible for what is recorded.

What this means for your visit:

  • More eye contact and attention, and less time spent looking at a screen.
  • Notes that are more complete and accurate, because nothing has to be recalled and typed up later.
  • Less paperwork after hours for your physician, which means more time available for appointments.

If you would prefer your physician not use the AI scribe during your visit, simply say so at the start of the appointment.
